I'm never had braces myself...but I will be getting them this year as well...once I've saved some money...same reason... TMJ caused by a deep bite. Are you getting the new Speed Braces? Apparently they are less painful, food doesn't get stuck in them as easily, they are smaller, you don't have to get them adjusted as often and you don't have to wear them as long as standard braces. Good luck with them

Yes I do want to get the Damon Braces Im also in the prosses of saving my money up for them. They are going to cost $4500.00 Yes TMJ/TMD isnt fun is it? Have you been wearing a orthotic to help your Jaw? How much are your Braces going to be? Im a bit nervous of the pain. But I think after it all I will be happy I did it.

Its going to be $6200.00 Canadian for me... I actually haven't been using an orthotic. The jaw never really bothered me until the last year or so... it seemed to suddenly get noticeable (sore jaw/clenching/snapping and popping etc.)... I'm sure my work stress didn't help with things... It will be nice once its done... and absolutely worth it.... Take care!

Ive just finished with the invisalign system, nothing really wrong with my teeth except for a madonna like gap which i loathed sooooo much. They are the best braces ever lol it will be good when they develop them to fix teeth that are really crooked. It probably will be painful for you, and i know that conventional braces can break and wires can dig into your gums (dont mean to scare you btw) but most of my friends who have had them adjust after about a week and soon you just get used to them. Just think about how awesome your teeth will look afterwards!! Goodluck

I had braces when I was younger. You don't have to worry about the pain that much. It's never a sharp pain, just a mellow kind of aching feeling. haha I don't know how to describe it but it's usually not very intense.
Oh and just a warning, when your dentist tells you that you have to wear a retainer, use special elastics, or do anything else, make sure you really do it, even if it's annoying or painful. I regret not wearing my retainer very long because my teeth have moved a bit back to their original position. They're not as bad as they were in the beginning, but just not as straight as they could be.
Wow and twilightsrose, is that $6200 for the speed braces? I'm canadian too and I think my braces only cost $2000 or so but that was for the regular kind. I wish I had the invisible braces! That would have saved me so much grief but I don't think they had those when I had braces.. about 9 years ago.
Good luck jess! You'll love your new smile once it's all over!

well...the prices do include EVERYTHING...all appointments for the 12-18 months that I am told I will probably need them...and retainer in the end. But, maybe things are that much more expensive. Apparently the regular (older style) braces are the same price. Mind you, if you get braces from your regular dentist for just straightening crooked teeth, I think that is cheaper than fixing bite problems as well. My teeth are actually barely crooked... but everything is aligned badly. Damon/Speed braces don't use wires & elastics the same way as the conventional braces...supposedly known to be less painful. I wish I could have gotten invisalign. My soon to be orthodontist does use them, but they are just for straightening teeth...not bite problems... mind you...they are way more expensive too...even more than what I am going to be paying. The clear ones (available as conventional not speed) would cost me an extra $300.00 per arch... but I'd rather have the benefits of the Speed braces anyhow...and since they are cheaper.... Hey jess1226 - yeah, it will be exciting once both things are done... will be absolutely worth it...

Yea My Teeth are stright too my bite is way off and gives me Jaw and head problems. Are the invisline somthing you wear all day? Can you eat with them in? I cant get them but just curous. The Damon dont look bad at all and they work great too and faster with less pain. I will be getting those. I dont care if my braces show... As long as I feel better and when they come off it will be well worth it. You know most Dr's here want 6500.00 too I think its about the norm anymore.

Yeah....invisalign are removable like a retainer...and you do remove them to eat. They are clear plastic trays made to specifically fit the teeth of the wearer and move the teeth into becoming straight. The tray are called aligners and you get several sets of aligners over time as your teeth move. You can wear them during the day and at night. Really neat concept.
Take care!!

Hrmm i have/had an overbite (top teeth sit over bottom ones) thanks to thumbsucking. Invisalign can fix minor overbites like mine but if youre having problems with your jaw then they probably wont be strong enough to move your teeth enough. Great braces though, people actually have to ask me if im wearing them and they make your teeth look whiter good weight loss incentive too because you have to brush ure teeth every time you eat (which soon gets tedious) so you dont bother eating lol Pricewise i paid $3200 NZ for a top set. Its about $6000 NZ for both top and bottom. Ask your orthodontist for all the options though because i know that invisalign are constantly improving their system to fix more problematic teeth and jaws. Maybe by the time youve saved up for them they might have invented something more suitable for you

I had braces for a cross bite. It hurts the most maybe the first 2 months of braces, but only for the first week, then the pain is much less intense and you don't notice it as much. Then for every month after that it only hurts the first 4-5 days after you get them tightened, so I wouldn't eat any hard or chewy foods! Towards the last few months of braces, theres pretty much no pain at all. Since you have a bite problem too, you'll most likely have to wear elastics or even headgear at night. A tip that I used - when wearing elastics, wear double during the day and triple at night, instead of just one. I was meant to have my braces for 2 years, but by doing that i got them off after a year and 4 months! The pain and cost is definately worth the end results! good luck!

Now that is something I'm glad I won't need to use - headgear. From my understanding, Damon & Speed Braces use elastics very differently than standard braces, if they use them at all - which for some cases, elastics are not used.
Good luck wiith your braces Jess... its coming up soon! You'll have to tell me EVERYTHING! ;D
