Here is a fairly recent article you might like to check out. Dr. Fugh-Berman's credentials seem excellent, and it's a relief to read something objective, since there isn't much. Fugh-Berman, A. 2003. Bust Enhancing Herbal Products. Ob Gyn 101(6):1345-1349. The article is available on-line on Dr. Fugh-Berman's web site, and here is the link: fugh-berman.com/I'll be interested in hearing the thoughts of all of you who know so much more about this subject than I do! Fusilarium is what is trying to kill my tomatos!!!!
Actually, I thought it was sort of an ol' pat on the back, since she acknowleges that prolactin plays a part in mammary development (something I've been saying for over a year now).
Also thought it was interesting that fennel did increase mammary gland size.
However, I think a better job would have been done if she had actually PERFORMED clinical trials, rather than just researching those that have already been done on the estrogenic effects of some herbs.
Almost all of these trials that she looked up where done on rodents. Most of them were done by checking the effects of the substances on the rodent's uteri (many not done on breasts), and many of them were done by checking the rodents after only a few days of use of the substances.
I found reference to some very good clinical trials done with phytoestrogens on actual human breast cells, in vitro, mind you.
My personal opinion is that even though she is a credible source, she really didn't do any real work on this paper, whatsoever, and I wonder why she bothered to do it, unless for some reason she was trying to disprove that herbal BE works. (Maybe her husband is a plastic surgeon?)
I would have been more impressed if she would have hit the lab, herself.
Just my opinion. Just kind of disappointed.

Interesting article (thanks for posting it). But, I do agree with Fawn. I was a bit disappointed to read that she was basically just summarizing some studies done on rodents (not even really much to do with breasts, mostly to do with weight and effects on uterus). When, oh when, is someone going to do an extensive study on this subject, someone who is not biased. I bought this book at a rummage sale filled with info. on a large variety of herbs, and the summary at the end of most of them was something like "many claims have been made or it has not been established or lacking in evidence. And, This requires further investigation or it remains to be seen/proven or more studies are needed. UGH! Okay, so we have all these herbs and 'natural remedies' which by 'word of mouth' have been proven to work in one way or another, yet NO real clinical, long term studies have been completed with relevant results. Frustrating!! WHY are Doctors and professionals too stubborn to realize that there are some natural things on our planet that can do the same thing as man-made products (only naturally). okay, sorry, got a little carried away for a minute, its just so exasperating... Myst
