just starting to get into dowsing and wondering if anyone here uses charts as I've seen on some sites - or is this cheating?

It's not cheating. Charts have the same use as lists of words. You can make your own charts if u'd like, but by the time ur p swings over what u need, u could have asked 'yes' or 'no' already and been on your way.
