Hi there, I have a question for those of you who do/have done Callanetics. Im interested in starting it up on my own, and was wondering if the DVD (I dont have a VHS player) or the book is better to get? Also, does callanetics do much for the upper arms? Thanks

Well, I have a VHS tape and I've also used the book. . . I've read reviews by folks who have used the DVD and they seem to think that the chapters aren't very convenient to use. Other than that formatting issue, I would probably go with the DVD over the book as you can actually see them doing the exercises. I think Callanetics works. I did 5 sessions over 2 weeks and had noticeably tighter thighs and a more lifted behind . If I had been disciplined enough to follow through with it for another 10 sessions, I bet I'd be pretty happy right now. There are not very many arm exercises; one does seem to work for tightening the underside of your upper arm somewhat, so that may be beneficial. I've found these exercises to be most helpful for hips/butt/thighs. If what you really want to focus on is toning your arms, I would recommend getting a pair of 5-lb hand weights (I've worked up to 10 lbs.) and do biceps curls and triceps extensions. These did wonders for me. Let me know if you have more questions. Peachy

Oh, the butt/hips/thigh thing is definitely what I'm going for The upper arms are just sorta that one thing thats been bugging me lately and that I wouldn't mind fixing up a bit, heh. I think I'll go grab the DVD soon, as I'm getting bored with my current routine (its just not working as well as Id like), I just wish I still had a VHS player...I found a copy of the VHS used on amazon for $3! And I'll definitely look into those weights...thanks for the tip! One more question though...how does Callanetics do for the abs and so forth? Right now I'm averaging about 120 crunches a day and its working alright, but it gets boring, you know? Thanks for the response...Im looking forward to this new work-out endeavor...

I think Callanetics is pretty good for abs. . . the exercises are gentle-looking, but you'll definitely feel it. And if boredom is a problem you're dealing with, be aware that Callanetics is not energetic or fast-paced at all. In fact, it sort of promotes relaxation so that you're almost ready to sleep afterwards. The eighties music and leotards kinda contribute to that ;D. Good luck with this and thanks - you're motivating me to get my lazy butt back with it. Peachy

Oops! Sorry about taking forever to respond back...life got busy. I must admit that for a while there, I kept up the routine perfectly...then came tons of work and holidays...so I've been slacking a bit for the past month... however, I did notice some very nice results (that I've kept over the month as well!) and completely plan on getting back into the program now. Thanks peachy for the motivation to get the dvd...I hope you stuck to it better than I did
