So I'm beginning to get very interested in some of the alternative medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Both of these practices, as well as many western health specialists today, believe that the proper diet can fix many many ills.
Now that I have my main health issues under control, I'm interested in revamping my diet to be a bit more healthy. I've seen some books out that are essentially encyclopedias about what health benefits different foods/spices/herbs have. Like, "the new whole foods encyclopedia" by Rebecca Wood and "Heinerman's Encylopedia of Healing Juices."
The problem is, most of the authors I'm finding don't have any sort of nutrition certification. I don't know about Wood, but Heinerman is a medical anthropologist, and as an anthropology student I like that, but most of his "evidence" is anecdotal. While I think it's valuable to look at the ways indigenous peoples used their foods, I really want some more reliable info than that.
So, does anyone know of some good, reliable resources for health benefits of food, spices or herbs? Not that the author has to be a registered MD, just someone with reliable evidence. I like the look of those 2 books b/c they are so extensive . . .
If anyone has any personal experience with using food to heal and (more imortantly) prevent illness, I'd love to hear it. Let me know where you find your information!
For now I'll stick to the basics: more veggies, less processed food and sugar, etc. But I'm keeping my caffeine for now, darn it!
