Hello, I am 42 years old and for the past several years, I get heavy night sweats a few nights up until I get my period. I get no help from doctors. I once tried a small dose of estradiol that I took every day but it didn't have any effect on the night sweats. Does anyone know what is causing this and what I can do about it. I assume it's a dip in hormones but I'm not sure which one. Does this happen to anyone else.
p.s. for the past several years (10+) I have also had extremely light periods. I've had several tests done by doctors to figure out why I have the night sweat and why my periods are so light but they say nothing is wrong with me.

Sometimes night sweats can have other reasons than hormons. Please, keep investigating why you have them. I don’t want to scare you, but a friend of mine had nightsweats for over two years. No one could figure out what was wrong and she got diagnosed with a life threatening illness, so keep looking until you find out what’s going on.
Light periods? Maybe you are pre-menopausal? Do you have any other symptoms?

Hi, Thinking about it I've had the night sweats over 15 years (at approx age 25 and am now 42) and have seen at least 25 doctors and have been tested for everything under the sun. I think it's hormonal because of the timing. It always happens a few days before my period until I get my period. My periods have been light ever since I was in my mid-20s.
Do u mind sharing what your friend's illness was? I've been tested for HIV and have had cat scans and all kinds of blood tests but nothing has turned up.
Thanks.

It does sure sound hormonal in your case. I am just freaking out now when I hear someone has night sweats.
My friend was diagnosed with colon cancer. And she too ran from one doctor to anther noone could find anything, all blood work came back perfect, no symptoms. She tryed to figure things out for over three years.

Microberry, I'm sorry about your friend. Colon cancer runs in my family and night sweats haven't been a symptom for anybody - in fact all of my family members diagnosed had no symptoms. I did have a colonscopy last Jan which was fine. I could see how blood tests didn't show anything since the only way to find colon cancer is with a colonscopy. I pray your friend will be ok.
If anyone has any advice on what they think about my case hormonally, I'd appreciate it. Since the night sweats happen the week before my period, wouldn't that be estrogen that is low. Although I did try estradiol which did nothing. Does anyone think progesterone will help? Or how can I get a dr in NYC to help me. I've tried many but they don't seem into the whole hormonal thing. Thanks.

Hi jennab, It certainly sounds as if you're peri-menopausal. The hormonal dips would account for the night sweats. Light periods could indicate that you're not ovulating. A complete gynecological check should confirm that. Just be advised that blood tests taken for hormonal levels have to be timed correctly to be effective. Hormones fluctuate and catching them when they dip is like timing the market. NYC has lots of doctors but not too many allopath/homeopath combinations. There are a few in the Village and they are pricey. Do some research at the library by checking out books on your specific health issue currently published by doctors. Also check out www.mayoclinic.com for more conventional information. In my case the sweats were caused by hormonal fluctuation but diet, especially sugar, bread, and coffee, had a similar effect. The combination just exacerbated the situation. Wishing you much luck,

Hi Gigi, The weird thing is this has been happening to me since I've been about 25 years old and I'm now 42. I have seen so many doctors over the years and have purchased several books on hormones but I can't seem to solve the problem. Is it possible to be perimenopausal that young and to continue for 12 years.
I have a very clean diet and actually don't eat any bread, never liked coffee and don't eat anything that has white sugar.
What did you do for your hormone fluctuations besided change in diet? Thanks.

Hi jennab,
I believe some women take things like wild yam or progesterone cream for pre-menopausal problems. You could try USB progesterone cream. There's quite a lot of things about it in the internet and also if you do a search on this board.

sounds like it could be a yin deficiency in TCM... you can look it up on google and see if you match other symptoms. there should be easy enough food dos and don'ts that should help.

Also try progesterone cream but not wild yam. I also had lots of tests done and hormones always came back OK. Until I found the right doctor ( who happens to be a mid wife) and she told me you need your hormones tested a certain time after your period. That is when we found out I was high in estrogen and low in progesterone.
The first couple of doctors were NO help and I was so bad by the time I found my new one that I ended up having a hysterectomy about 5 or 6 years ago. By the way best thing that I ever agreed to. Now I'm on estrogen and progesterone gels and love it. ;D
