I have a gripe that has absolutely nothing to do with BE, but I really need to vent, so here goes. (Warning, it is a long one):
We have two computers, the one that I am using now (newer one just for mom and dad) and the older one (just for the kids to play their games on). The older one runs on Windows 98, and awhile ago the cd-rom stopped working. Took it into a local comp. shop to have the cd-rom replaced. The lady calls me up and says there is nothing wrong with the cd-rom, asks me what was the prob. I told her that whenever a CD was loaded it would make this weird soft grinding noise, like it was trying to load, but couldn't. She said she would check it again. She called later and said there was nothing wrong with the cd-rom and that it was probably because the cd's were dirty and to clean them all. Then she went on to say she had done a spyware check and virus check on the comp. and also installed a pop-up stopper. I thought, hmm... Didn't ask her to, but I guess she was trying to be nice. Went in and picked it up. Now I know why she did those extras, they charged me by the hour! :oWent home, tried the cd-rom, okay, weird now it was working. It worked for a week and then went kaput again! I know, I shoulda called her back and b**ched, but I am too nice for my own good
But, now we had no money left to replace the cd-rom, since we gave what we had saved for the comp. to that stupid lady to do virtually nothing!!
So, after awhile, we decided to go to Bestbuy and see how much they charged to replace it. It was a little more then we could spare. So we decided to get an external cdrw. We asked that lady if it was compatible with our pc (and I told her our internal cd-rom wasn't working), she said yes. Drove all the way home, and discovered you had to have a working cd-rom to install the driver before you could install the new cd-rom!! Was able to figure out how to install it through our network, but, of course, it didn't work! Drove all the way back and returned it.
More time passed and we found a external cdrw at a rummage sale (of all places), only used once to transfer some files from a laptop. The driver could be installed from the website. It was only $25, so what could we loose? Went home, downloaded the driver, hooked up the cdrw, restarted, and it worked!! I was so happy, this mess was finally over! Then proceeded to install my sons Bob the Builder game, restarted, 'CRASH'! The logon window pops up, the virus protection window pops up, the happy music comes on, the background clouds come up, and then... nothing. No windows, nothing. Did the same thing in safe mode, and the same thing at the restore points, and so on... I cried.
So, I have spent the past week posting at a bunch of computer techy forums, only one site actually tried to help me computerhope.com, and reading up on these two huge-gigantic computer fixing books from the library. I now have so much knowledge in my brain about computers, that my brain has now overloaded, and I now feel like the broken computer! I downloaded and played with a startup disk (didn't know what I was doing), I played with the BIOS (didn't know what I was doing), step-by-step confirmation, command prompts, fdisk, scanreg, and on and on... Okay, I'M DONE!!
We now have a very expensive, large paperweight! And all I can think of is that if that stupid lady would have just replaced the cd-rom like I requested to begin with, NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED!
What’s the moral of the story?? If you have to be a b**ch to get things done right... then be one! Don't be afraid (like me), 'cause you'll end up screwed
(sorry this was so long, but I just had to vent)
