May have just saved me big time....... www.tidesoflife.com/pregprodhea.htmRecently I've done a couple of online hormone tests and started to realise that I seem to be Estrogen dominant/Progesterone deficient. Couldn't really work out why - 39 years, no indication of early menopause. Then I stumbled on this.... which suggests that having a tubal ligation (which I did) sends a message to the ovaries to stop producing progesterone. Well it only a theory...but it would expain a lot. So anyway...thanks for the link!!!!!!!!!!!!! rebecca

Ray Peat is a genius!!! And pregnenolone is better than sex and chocolate put together!
Even though you're only 39, remember that "peri-menopause" starts as early as ten years before menopause. During peri-menopause, you don't always ovulate every month - this is a natural part of aging. If you don't ovulate, you won't produce enough progesterone. So, even though you're no where really near menopause, you're still getting less progesterone than you need. And since you're still menstruating, you're still getting LOTS of estrogen. Many women between 35 and menopause are estrogen dominant because of this.
I've been using progesterone for several years just for this fact alone.
And pregnenolone is excellent for the midlife blues. I've had it suck me out of depressive pits that even weeks of SSRI's didn't touch - and within an hour of taking it!
Ray Peat is a genius!

I went to the website and the link to Pregnenolone does not work and their company store does not seem to have it on their website either. Do they not offer it???
The reason I am interested is your comment about how it helped you out of your depression. I have been prescribed anti-depressants but I don't want to take them. The idea scares me for some reason.
How does the Pregnenolone work and how long do you have to take it. Is it addicting??? Does it affect NBE??? I am taking Mirifem right now.
Any help you could give would be great.
Thanks Brenda

Hi Snowqueen I did google it but I am a little confused - guess I have to read the stuff more carefully. As for St. John's Wort - I haven't tried it....I heard/read (like anti-depressants) that it is addicting and hard to come off of. I am looking for something that I don't have to have withdrawal symptoms on. I have enough trouble with trying to wean myself off Diet Coke/Caffeine/Aspartame....not to mention nicotine. Did you experience any problems with that - did you take it short term or do you take it long term??? Thanks Brenda

Pregnenolone & Depression - yes, I know what you mean about being afraid to take them. Some of them are very hard to come off of. A close friend got suicidal going on and then off of Zoloft. You can get pregnenolone here: www.kalyx.com/store/search.cfm?keyword=pregnenolone&AffiliateID=2004097604 I have never had any trouble with St. John's Wort - I've never heard that it's addicting and never had a problem. You SHOULD stay away from aspartame though, if you have problems with depression. If they've given you Wellbutrin for nicotine, go ahead and give it a shot, though. It actually helps with BE and with smoking. I took it for a while, and the worst I got was bad headaches (lots and lots of water helps with those). I've taken pregnenolone off and on for years - it's not something you have to take constantly. Pregnenolone is a cholesterol based precursor that people normally manufacture, but the supply can fall off with age, stress and bad nutrition. It will definitely NOT hurt BE. The body uses it to make the steroidal hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. It's also used to make cortisol and aldosterol. You take one every day for a week, then take every couple of days, depending on your age. Once you get your levels normal, the body can "recycle it" - so you don't have to take it constantly. One a day for a week, then one every other day, then maybe three a week. If you are under 35, just take one a week after the initial two weeks. If you are over 35 OR under a lot of pressure and stress, take two or three times per week. Google up "Ray Peat" for more information. I had no problems with it. Sometimes it causes your dreams to be more vivid, especially if you take it close to bed time. It improves both mood and memory. I'll be honest with you - I've taken it when feeling particularly "low" and felt better and cheerful within an hour. It's THAT good. Fawn

Thanks Rebecca and Fawn for your input.
I did not know that Aspartame was not good for depression - gosh I better kick that habit quick!! I am not on Wellbutrin - haven't tried to quit smoking yet. Not sure what I will do when I quit - probably cold turkey.
I am glad to hear that Pregnenolone is not addicting and does not interfere with BE!! Thank you so much Fawn for the information - I will check out the website and will likely order some.
I am going through a particularly painful and stressful time right now and am really concerned about my depression. I am not in the least suicidal - but I am very sad, tired, anxious, etc. If this is as good as you say it is, I will try it!!!

My last batch was 30s, but had to get them right away and that's all they had at the store. Daily dose isn't as important as weekly dose, so get which ever one fits your budget. Take 300 mgs during the first week, 200 mgs the next week and then 100 mgs every week. You can up that to 300mgs during the week you get PMS, if you get it. (Or during the week you ovulate.) 100 mgs a week after that is a good maintenance dose, and you can add more on the days you feel blue.

Fawn, I find this discussion very interesting as Im on both wellbutrin and a low dose of zoloft. I began with zoloft in Dec. 2004. Than added wellbutrin for lost of libido about 3 months ago. Ive tried several times to wean off 12mg of zoloft and after about 3 days of being completey off of it, I experience the worst depression Ive ever had (very scary). So ofcourse I jumped right back on it.
I dont think wellbutrin will be much of a problem weaning, just intense headaches.
These meds have helped me tremendously but if there is a natural route that will give me the same effect I'd rather go that way.
Pregnenolone sounds interesting. If you have any suggestions on how to wean off these meds please let me know. As I hate the idea of having to take meds for the rest of my life.

They gave my husband Zoloft to help him sleep and he had the same problem.
You should really talk to your doctor about getting off the zoloft if that's what you want to do. I know with my husband that he sort of just had to keep reminding himself that it was just the withdrawal, and he dropped dosages slowly over a couple of weeks.
If you want to start pregnenolone, you can, it won't interfere with zoloft or wellbutrin. But if your reaction to zoloft withdrawl was that bad, it should be supervised by your doctor. I know it took my husband about 5-7 days to get through that, but he wasn't on it very long.
(And it didn't help him sleep, either)
