OK, so I did something stupid--jerked open a window in a twisted, off-balance position. Felt immediate pain and tried to stretch it out. As a result I couldn't turn to one side without discomfort and walking was scary. That was 3 days ago. Currently the back isn't as bad as the leg. Now it feels like sciatica and sometimes direct pressure to the spot relieves it temporarily. So far advil has just dulled the pain. Does anyone know of another way to relieve this either herbally, manually or otherwise? Thanks in advance.

Hot soaks with epsom salt and baking soda.
Internally - magnesium. Also try Midol or Doans instead of plain Advil.
Or - have a beer.
Seriously, soaks, doans, stretching out the ligaments and something to relax you. Try not to be TOO still, even if you want to rest. You need to move, stretch and keep the blood and fluids moving.
BTW - a combination of 2 aspirins and 2 tylenol sometimes works better than just one or the other.
If it's not better in 2 days, or gets worse, you may want to see a chiropractor. When you say sciatica, I think a pinched nerve due to spasms caused sublaxation in the spine. Faster to get adjusted than wait for the spasm to relax, and the pinching to "fix itself".
Hell, you may just want to head straight for the chiropracter!

Thanks for the suggestions. It feels a lot better right now but it is the end of the day. Think I'll start with the beer Tried the epsom salts, heat, magnesium and have been gently stretching everything out. All work to a degree to minimize the pain. The worst is sleeping-I use pillows to stay comfortable. I want to do the pilates in the worst way but I know that's not the best course of action. The chiropracter is on the list but I have a feeling it'll get better before I'm able to get an appointment. In the meantime, I'll try all the things you suggested especially the beer. Oh, a friend at work recommended something that the PT's she was working with suggested-pool noodles-the floats kids use. While lying on a mat on the floor, line one up lengthwise from the base of the neck down the spine. It's supposed to cushion the spine and guide it back into alignment. Thanks again.
