Okay, so I have a decision to make. I am really confused about what I wanna do, so bear with me while I ramble on for a minute. I interviewed for this job last May...two months after I left my job to stay at home with my kids for a while. The reason I took the interview was because it was part time and the pay was unheard of. Ended up that they decided to hire someone full time instead, but never called me to tell me that. Five months after the fact, I got a phone call from them saying that they were gonna hire someone part time in addition to the full timer they hired previously...and wanted to know if I was still interested. My problem was the fact that they didn't even bother to call when they decided to go with a full time person or even to tell me that they decided on another person for the job. And to call someone 5 months later and act like it's the next day...I guess I just really got irritated. So when they called 5 months ago, they had also changed the schedule from 3 days a week(24 hours/week) to 5 days a week(15 hours)...and there was no way I was gonna pay a sitter 5 days a week and not make any money in the process. So I passed it up and that was that. This afternoon I got another call from them. Wanting to know if I would yet again be interested in part time work for their company. I guess they have now decided to go back to 3 days a week but this time it's only 18 hrs. per week. Which isn't bad...better than the 5 day a week plan they had going! The trouble I am having is the fact that they can't seem to ever really make a decision and stick with it. And what kind of stability can u have with people like that? I have been wanting to go back to work, mainly to get out of the house...besides the occasional trip to the grocery...where else do I really go? This job pays $15.00 an hour, so I find it really hard to pass it up this time around....but I am so used to staying at home with my kids, that it will be really weird to get back out there again. Trust me, I am not one of those people who are scared by change, it's just that I am really confused about this one. On one hand I want to call them back in the morning and say I'll take it...but on the other, I want to tell them to quit calling me. It still amazes me that they just keep calling. Either I really impressed them, or they are really desperate...lol....I'll go with the first one! Any input is appreciated! Kelly

Generally, if they desire to hire, then they'll call. If employers took time to call everyone they turned down, they'd spend more time doing that, instead of their main objective. And besides, those are painful calls to make, even if it's only to one person.
I'd tell them that I was interested, but in the specific schedule mentioned. That you're willing to be flexible, however, changing on a weekly basis will be more difficult (make it sound good).
Once you get to the office, make sure to read the fine print to know if they don't have the option of changing ur schedule at their whim.
Good luck!

I called them back this afternoon to let them know that I accepted the postion on the terms of three days a week same pay as discussed previously. I let them know that I am flexible, and like u said, that I cannot change week to week, but could arrange to change days if adequate notice was given. They didn't seem to mind. I am waiting to hear back from the other owner on when to start. In a way I am excited to get back to work cuz I have been home for almost a year. And the money, how could I pass that up? But on the other hand, I am concerned with the fact that they seem to change their needs on a monthly basis...first they wanted part time, then full time...then part time again with it being 5 days a week, and now back to the original part time working 3 days a week. They seem to change their minds alot when it comes to hiring, and it makes me wonder what will happen when they slow down again...are they gonna need me anymore? I hope it doesn't turn out that way, but these days, I guess not alot of us have great stability in our jobs. I am trying to stay positive and give this a real chance. And hopefully it will turn out to be a good decision on my part! Thanks for the advice Wen! Kelly

Okay so the other owner finally called me tonight...we were talking about the postition and she brought up pay. She told me that it pays $12/hr....I said that I thought it was still the same $15, just like before...she said that there was less hours so therefore less pay...whatever! I was kinda mad at first, but then after she was saying that most of my work could be done from my home until their new office was built, I kinda thought it sounded better all of the sudden...lol... So basically I will work Monday, Wednesday and Friday from either 8-2 or 9-3....but I can really decide what hours I want to keep....and my mornings after my training is done will most likely be spent at home, and then coming in to their place around lunch time to finish...then go home! Can u really beat that? She did say that if things go well, there are always reevaluations that will increase the rate of pay... Guess I just need to be happy about it and see what happens, ya know? I start the 23rd of this month. Sounds like a plan!!! Kelly

Hi Kelly,
I think it sounds great! And it's always a plus to have an employer who seems quite flexible. Go for it and good luck!

Sounds win-win..try to stay ahead of the game..and see if there's a way to help the company increase your pay. Money saving suggestions, new venue to pursue...keep your brain whirling. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words. I think that I will have to wait and see how I like it, but I have done worse things for less money...like housekeeping in a hospital for $6/hr...of course that was many years ago...but the nightmares from it seem like it was just yesterday...lol...that was a nasty job, but I worked it for over 2 years...when u have kids, you do what you gotta do. I really hope this works out. And Wen, I was thinking about ways to get the increases last night...and with the 2 who are running this business, it won't be hard to give them idea on how to save money and whatnot. They are definitely not the brightest bulbs in the house, if u know what I mean! Kelly

Okay, so just a little venting on my part...I had my first day on the new job yesterday...and my last I went in expecting it to be different, but I never anticipated it being what it turned out to be. Which was the most disorganized and disfunctional atmosphere I have ever seen in my life! I mean, these people don't have a clue how to operate a business nor do they have a clue on how you act in the workplace. I was there all of maybe 10 minutes before I started to see this. They did more trash talking than they did training. They continually talked about their employees like a bunch of morans, with no regard for me, as a new employee, sitting there having to listen to it. I got to also observe how they spoke down to the other employees over the phone. I was so mad because it was such a waste of time for me. I was there from 9:30AM until about 1:45PM...I was supposed to be done at 1PM, and even the day before one of the owners called and spoke to my husband since I was out. She told him that she never told me what time to be there on Monday morning! Which she already had, but originally she told me that I would be working from 10-4...she told him 9:30-1. At about 1:15, they gave me a stack of maybe 75 files to proof. I told her that I was supposed to be out at 1PM, and I needed to pick up my daughter and then get my son off the bus. They seemed to be angry that I wasn't going to stay and finish what they still hadn't managed to train me on. They also neglected to tell me that they had changed my pay rate again. First it was $15/hr, then it became $12...and around noon they told me it would now be $10/hr...and they changed my days, but told me that they could change again...and in a few weeks, when they slow down again, they would probably only need me one day a week...and sometimes in the summer they may not need me at all!!!! What the heck? They have no idea what they want, or what they need! I was so confused with everything that I even made a wrong turn on the way home! ;D They handed me a contract(one of those non-compete contracts) and expected me to sign it without even reading. They said that it was mandatory, but really didn't need to be read cuz it was just a normal contract between employer/employee! Yea, like I am gonna sign something I have not read yet! Not to mention the fact that they had no idea what I meant by a W2 form for tax purposes. I had to explain what it was and why I needed to fill one out! There were so many red flags that I lost count! I called and left them a voice mail yesterday evening to talk to them about why I was not returning, but to this point they have not returned the call. I didn't even say what the call was about, just to call me back. So, tonight, I sent an email letting them know that I wouldn't be back. I atleast was professional about, even if they don't know the meaning of the word. I basically just said that I didn't feel comfortable in an unstable job and need something more consistant than what they are offering. That I would rather not waste anymore of my time as well as theirs, and that they would be better off finding someone better suited for that position. Well, looks like I am back to looking again, and staying home with my kids! Which is better than dreading going into someplace like that to work everyday! Kelly ;D

>>"and staying home with my kids!"
When possible, that is the best way to go!
Have you thought of starting something out of your house? If you put flyers all over the place announcing that you are there, you would be amazed at what comes out of the wood work!

Yea, I have thought of doing work out of my home...but I can't come up with any idea of what to do! I have been home with my kids for a year now, and that has been great. I really just miss the interaction between the adults! It's not that big a deal if I go back to work or not, but I think for me it would be nice to get out of the house every once in a while. I have scoured the papers and even looked online...there's nothing right now and hasn't been much of anything within the last year. Just kinda depressing, u know? Kelly

Well, remember that bunch that just got though jerking you around? You could be competition against them. Do you have a computer? If so, get some tax software like Turbo Tax and do taxes for people and businesses for $50 or $80 each. Computers tend to speed things up so you could do a couple of hundred of those each year. Good for a few months during tax season. But not good for the rest of the year. You could get something like Microsoft Money or Quicken and do book keeping. If you had book keeping customers, then they are sure to need taxes done at the end of each year. It really doesn't matter what you do as long as you're good at it. There is always someone who is weak in the areas that you are strong. It's just a matter of trial and error until you find your niche. Wahaika

Thanks for the advice. I am good with numbers and have done general ledgers and accts rec. and payable previously. It was actually something I enjoyed and would like to get back into. I never thought of doing this out of my home though...so it's definitely some food for thought. The one thing that I don't have in my favor is a degree of any sort. I did not go to college, so I am wondering if this would even work for that reason...everything I know I have learned from someone else. I am one of those people who just picked it up quickly and loved it. I feel I would be happier in such a job. I will be thinking about this and see what I can come up with. If u have any comments or ideas, let me know!!! Thanks alot, Kelly

Just one comment on accounting: You don't need to have a degree to be an accountant. You only need a degree if you want to be a CPA. There are lots of accountants that are not CPAs.
If you wanted to, you could go to your local college and take just the accounting classes. Places like H & R Block also offer instruction once per year (I think) also. I think you have to give them a percentage for a year or something like that.
I would say that if you like to do accounting then you have found an area that is in demand, pays well, and with some planning, would be a good home business where you could set your own hours. Just don't get too enveloped. Remember why it's a HOME business.
Excellence and word of mouth will get you farther than a college degree.
Good luck!
