I've read here that soy should be avoided whilst on BO. This may be a stupid question, but is soy the same as soya, eg soya milk? I can't have ordinary milk (upsets my stomach), and have soya milk every day.

Hi Shaz, I think soya milk and soya products should be avoid if poss. I also have to steer clear of dairy and was told by a nutritionist to go for soya products unless I had an underactive thyroid. So I have soya milk in limited amounts, and take kelp (and try to remember to take l-tyrosine too). Small amounts of soya milk shouldn't be too bad but including a large amount of soya (tofu/tempeh/miso) in your diet isn't so great for BE I think. WQ

I've tried goat's milk - it's really disgusting!
What is the problem with soya and BE exactly?

Hi Shaz, Great that u have grown instaed of being on Soy throughout. Actually soy interferes (I don't know what exactly it does) iwth thyroid activity andmay bring the body temps down. A good body temp (around 98 degressF) is very necessary for growth as it promotes the hormonal conversions etc (I remember reading the whole chain of hormonal activity, but can't remember where. I may search the board for tempatures and BE).
Since soy brings the temps down, it is not good for BE. This is somehting very basic. U see I am not a biology student and it has taken a long time for me to get used to terms and stuff here. So I am just using my language here.
Wonder if it is of any help.

Soy also contains phytoestrogens that work as estradial antagonists (i.e. they fill up the receptors, but they don't cause the dna changes to the cells that estradiol will.)
That's why it's considered to be good for breast cancer protection.
Besides soy, brocolli & cauliflower are bad for thyroid if eaten raw. But I think the phyto issue is the big one.
And I agree - goat's milk IS disgusting. Can't you skip the milk altogether? Or try rice milk?
Or try acidolphus (sp?) milk or adding live-bacteria yogurt to regular milk.

I'm going to try rice milk today - thanks for the tips. I've been really ill on normal milk before (been in hospital with the most severe stomach cramps), so I wouldn't consider trying it again at the moment.
I don't know if the small increase I have is permanent yet. But, doesn't the fact that I'm sore nearly all the time mean that the BO is reaching my estrogen receptors, even with soya milk??

I just started taking a calcium supplement and was wondering something....it says that it contains soy of some sort...could this be a really bad thing? I have read lots of stuff on the negative effects of soy along with BE and wondered if this was more with BO or herbs alike? Anyone have any idea??? Kelly

Its sort of a matter of degrees - if you are drinking a couple cups of soy milk every single day you might find things slowed down. (Also, there might be THAT much phytoestrogens left after they make milk out of it.)
However, if you are taking a small supplement everyday that has a small amount of soy in it as an added ingredient its unlikely to be enough to make that much of a difference. You should probably use it up.
It may be completely impossible to avoid ALL soy products, and it's probably NOT necessary. However, if you are using a lot of soy; milk, tofu, flour, etc. everyday, you probably want to make some changes.

Thanks for the info...the only thing that I am taking that has soy listed is the calcium supplement...no soy milk...etc. I was just curious to know what effect if any this amount would have on BE routine... Thanks again, Kelly
